How standings work
Standings formats, points configuration, and sport-specific presets.
Overview
Standings track each team's record within a season and rank them by performance. League OS calculates standings automatically from game results using the points system you configure on the league settings page. This guide explains the available formats and how to choose the right points values for your sport.
Standings formats
The Format setting determines the tournament or season structure used to rank teams. Choose the format that matches how your league is organised.
Round Robin
Every team plays every other team at least once. All results count toward a single standings table ranked by accumulated points. This is the most common format for regular-season play because it gives every team an equal number of games and minimises the impact of a single bad result.
Best for: Regular seasons, recreational leagues, and any competition where you want each team to face every opponent.
Swiss System
Teams are paired each round against opponents with a similar record. No team is eliminated — everyone plays the same number of rounds and is ranked by total points at the end. Swiss is ideal when the field is too large for round robin but you still want every team to have a meaningful final standing.
Best for: Large tournaments (16+ teams), chess-style events, and competitions where bracket fairness matters more than a true knockout experience.
Single Elimination
Teams are placed in a bracket. Lose once and you are eliminated. The bracket advances until a champion is crowned. Single elimination produces fast, decisive results and is the standard format for playoff rounds and most cup competitions.
Best for: Playoff brackets, cup tournaments, and any event where a clear winner is needed in the fewest possible games.
Double Elimination
Teams must lose twice to be eliminated. After a first loss, they move into a losers' bracket and continue competing. Double elimination is more forgiving than single elimination and rewards consistent performance over the entire event.
Best for: Competitive tournaments where one bad game should not end a team's run, and formats such as esports or wrestling where double-chance brackets are standard.
Points configuration
Points are awarded after each game result. You can customise them from the Standings section of your league's General settings.
| Field | Default | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Win Points | 3 | Points awarded to the winning team. |
| Draw Points | 1 | Points awarded to each team when the game ends level. |
| Loss Points | 0 | Points awarded to the losing team. Almost always 0. |
| OT Loss Points | 0 | Points awarded for a loss in overtime or a shootout. Used by ice hockey and some other sports to reward teams that force extra time. |
| Forfeit Loss Points | 0 | Points awarded to a team that forfeits a game. The opposing team receives the standard Win Points. Set to 0 to record the forfeit without a points penalty; negative values are not supported. |
Points presets by sport
The table below shows the conventional points system for common sports. Use these as a starting point and adjust to match your league's specific rules.
| Sport | Win | Draw | Loss | OT Loss | Forfeit Loss | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Soccer / Football | 3 | 1 | 0 | — | 0 | FIFA standard. 3 points for a win discourages defensive play. |
| Ice Hockey | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | NHL system. No draws — overtime/shootout determines the winner. Losing in OT still earns 1 point. |
| Basketball | 2 | 0 | 0 | — | 0 | Draws are impossible; overtime always produces a winner. |
| Baseball / Softball | 2 | 0 | 0 | — | 0 | Draws are extremely rare. Use Win 1 / Loss 0 for win-percentage tracking. |
| Rugby Union | 4 | 2 | 0 | — | 0 | World Rugby standard. Bonus points (tries scored / losing by ≤7) are tracked separately. |
| Volleyball | 3 | 0 | 0 | 1 | 0 | FIVB format: 3-0 or 3-1 win = 3 pts. 3-2 win = 2 pts, 2-3 loss = 1 pt. |
| Field Hockey | 3 | 1 | 0 | — | 0 | Same as soccer. |
| American Football | 2 | 1 | 0 | — | 0 | NFL uses Win 1 / Draw 0.5 / Loss 0 expressed as win percentage, not points. Use 2/1/0 as an equivalent integer system. |
| Cricket | 2 | 1 | 0 | — | 0 | ICC group-stage standard. |
Recording forfeits
A forfeit is recorded on the game's result form by checking the Forfeit checkbox when entering scores. The team with the higher score is credited as the winner and receives Win Points. The losing team is credited with a forfeit loss and receives Forfeit Loss Points (default 0).
Forfeits appear as a separate column in standings so administrators and players can distinguish them from regular losses. The forfeiting team's loss total includes the forfeit — it is not tracked as a standalone category that removes it from the W/L record.
Note: a game marked as both Forfeit and Overtime will be treated as a forfeit. Goal differential and goals for/against are not updated for forfeit results, since no competitive play occurred.
Auto-update standings
When Auto-update standings on result entry is enabled, League OS recalculates standings immediately each time a game result is saved — no manual refresh needed. When this setting is off, standings are managed manually. You can toggle it at any time from league settings.
If you have a large existing season with manually managed records, it is safest to leave auto-update disabled until you have verified that all historical results are correctly entered.
